Benefits of Employee Stock Options

In previous articles I have discussed why stock options can be a great way to not only secure your position in stocks but also provide you with an opportunity to speculate on stock performance without having to actually buy or sell the stocks. In stock options, the investor is given the chance to analyze and examine the stocks to see if they are worth putting money in and it goes one step further as it gives the investor the chance to test his theory without having to spend too much money. Stock options can be said to be the ultimate speculation with the least risk and maximum possible returns. This view of looking into stock options is from the perspective of the stock option buyers. On the other side, stock options can also be a good idea for stock option sellers. Companies are one of these stock option sellers.

In recent years, more and more companies have chosen to provide stock options to their employees. These stock options have been aptly called employee stock option and they come in generally two types: the incentive stock option and non-qualified stock option. Like any stock option, employee stock option gives its holder the right to exercise the option upon reaching a certain stock price, called ‘grant’ price, which is usually the stock price at the time of the stock option benefit. Companies choose to give employee stock option benefits for various reasons. One of the main reasons is that companies want to attract more talented individuals to join their workforce and at the same time encourage their employees to work hard and stay with the company. Another reason is to award the good work that their managerial employees have done. While in the past only the top, ‘key’ company officers were given stock options, now, even the rank and file employees are offered stock options. A new culture is starting to sweep companies by providing broad-based employee stock options and treating employees as owners. This is said to motivate the employees to work better and have the goal of achieving company growth for as owners of stocks themselves, they hold a significant interest in the company.

Employee stock option is also a great way to let the employees share in the possible growth of the company while preserving cash and adding new investors. Instead of monetary benefits, companies can offer stock options.
